P: ¿Cuál es la principal diferencia entre este álbum y (el álbum de regreso de los Pumpkins de 2007) “Zeitgeist”?
R: “Zeitgeist”, en retrospectiva, es el álbum de la muerte — el último álbum de la era “Smashing Pumpkins”. Tomó siete años en salir. Fui con una idea muy ingenua. Todo el mundo me quería para hacer otro  “Siamese Dream”, en el cual equipara en mi mente a un montón de guitarras fuertes, y eso era como una transición a una nueva era. Era como la 3º parte de  “Indiana Jones” . Juegas a una expectativa. La jugada inteligente cuando volvimos nuevamente juntos hubiera sido hacer un álbum de grandes éxitos, un tour de para ganar dinero tocando nuestras mejores canciones, y luego hacer un nuevo disco.  Pero no lo hice — pese a la consternación de Jimmy (Chamberlin) y mi manager, porque dejé millones de dólares sobre la mesa. Pero mi plan no funcionó bien. Cuando hice “Siamese Dream”, estuve tomando LSD, estaba destrozado por una chica que más tarde se convirtió en mi esposa. No se podía hacer todo eso otra vez . P: Las cosas se pusieron hostiles durante ese tour de 2008. Estabas muy abusivo hacia el público, y algunas personas todavía no han olvidado o perdonado. Me recordó algo al raro e incómodo Andy Kaufman
R: es (pro) lucha libre (risas). Soy un personaje. Incluso Jimmy Chamberlin se lo creyó. Todo lo que él veía era dinero tirado por el desagüe. Soy raro como Wayne (Coyne) de the Flaming Lips. Q: What’s the main difference between this album and (2007 Pumpkins comeback album) “Zeitgeist”?
A: “Zeitgeist,” in retrospect, is the death album — the last album of the Smashing Pumpkins era. It just took seven years to come out. I went in with a very naive idea. Everyone wants me to make “Siamese Dream” again, which equated in my mind to a bunch of loud guitars, with that as a transition into a new era. It was like “Indiana Jones” Part 3. You play to an expectation. The smart move when we got back together would’ve been to do a greatest hits album, a greatest hits money tour, then do a new album. I didn’t do that — much to the consternation of Jimmy (Chamberlin) and my management, because I left millions of dollars on the table. But my plan didn’t work either. When I made “Siamese Dream,” I was taking LSD, crashing on people’s couches, broken-hearted over a girl who later became my wife. You can’t be that again. It’s disrespectful to your own past to think you can relive your own past. I kept saying to Jimmy, where is the psychedelia? Because I always felt that was the heart of our sound. So I got rid of things, until it became this very primal music, one angry guitar and one angry drummer. I tried to build on that. But my relationship with Jimmy was broken. I didn’t want to admit it. He would’ve been happy to keep it going and I had the blinders on and was marching forward. I just stepped in the wrong mudhole. But I learned some things. I came across an apathetic audience, and it ignited something in me. It brought back that old “(expletive) you.”
Q: Things got hostile during that 2008 tour. You were pretty abusive toward the audience, and some people still haven’t forgotten that or forgiven you. It reminded me of some weird, uncomfortable Andy Kaufman skit.
A: It’s (pro) wrestling (laughs). I’m in character. Even Jimmy Chamberlin believed it. All he saw was money going down the drain. I’m a weirdo like Wayne (Coyne) from the Flaming Lips. He’ll be the guy in the bubble floating above the audience and I’ll be the guy in the black dress on stage. There’s a saying in wrestling where you start to live your gimmick. On the road, I’m in character, at home I’m with my cats playing Xbox. Is it smart? No. Is it compelling? At times. But I needed to do it.

Hace unos días os traíamos algunas de las declaraciones que Billy Corgan había efectuado a Antiquiet respecto al nuevo disco de The Smashing Pumpkins o su capacidad para crear éxitos. Sin embargo, habíamos obviado las palabras más controvertidas, dirigidas a Radiohead.
“No puedo pensar en nadie más allá de Weird Al Yankovic que haya acogido y se haya meado más en el rock que yo. Obviamente hay un nivel de reverencia pero también hay un nivel de inteligencia para saber en lo que mearte.

Porque yo no me meo en Rainbow. No me meo en Deep Purple. Pero me mearía en Radiohead por toda su pomposidad. Este sistema de valoración que dice que Jonny Greenwood es más valioso que Ritchie Blackmore. No en el mundo en el que crecí.”
Corgan a su vez no se pone al mismo nivel que Blackmore. “Así que ahí estoy defendiendo cosas. ¿Es Ritchie Blackmore mejor guitarrista que yo y Jonny Greenwood? Si. ¿Hemos hecho todos contribuciones? Si. No ataco eso. Lo que ataco es la pomposidad que dice que esto es más valioso que eso. Estoy harto de eso. Estoy hasta los mismísmos cojones de eso pero nadie parece cansarse.”
Recordad que “Oceania”, nuevo disco de The Smashing Pumpkins, se editará el próximo lunes 18 de junio.

El vocalista de Smashing Pumpkins  Billy Corgan fue entrevistado en la nueva edición de la revista NME, y fue bastante sincero acerca de su aversión hacia el guitarrista de los Pumpkins, James Iha.  También habló el por qué de que  Chamberlin abandonase la banda y que el ganar dinero estaba detrás de su ida. Aquí algunos extractos:

[Jimmy Chamberlin] dijo en su declaración que él “simplemente no podía cobrar el cheque” …

“Ahora lo podeís ver, es una oportunidad perfecta para mí para enterrar a Jimmy como un puto mentiroso.  Pero yo no.  Eso es  mentira.  Esa declaración es totalmente mentira

¿Todavía sientes algún rencor hacia otros miembros de la banda sobre la forma en que terminó la misma?

“Uhhh… Estoy OK con Jimmy.  En este momento no tenemos ninguna relación, quiero decir, no tengo ninguna mala voluntad.  Quiero verlo  bien.  James Iha, creo que es simplemente un pedazo de mierda.  Creo que es uno de los peores seres humanos que he conocido en mi vida.  Y Arcy, ella es una especie de, hace su propio camino, es como muy inocente”.

Esas fotos que se publicaron cuando fue detenida por no presentarse en un cita judicial sugirieron que no estaba realmente en un buen lugar

“Sí, es terrible.  Pero ella no es una mala persona.  Y no tengo ninguna animadversión hacia ella, a pesar de que he tenido que lidiar con putos pleitos y cosas así.  Si hay un cualquier puto culpable ese es Iha.  Pero sabes, él estaba allí , hacíamos cosas buenas juntos, creo que es un buen músico cuando le da, pero la mayoría del tiempo no lo es.  Y eso es todo.

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan is interviewed in the new issue of NME Magazine, and he was quite candid about his dislike of former Pumpkins guitarist James Iha.  He also discussed why Chamberlin left the band, and elaborated that money was a reason behind Chamberlin leaving. Here are some excerpts.
[Jimmy Chamberlin] said in his statement on leaving that he “couldn’t just cash the cheque”…
“See now, here is a perfect opportunity for me to bury Jimmy as a fucking liar.  But I won’t.  That’s a lie.  That statement’s just a flat-out lie.”
Do you still feel any rancor towards other band members about the way it ended?
“Uhhh… I’m OK with Jimmy.  We don’t have a relationship at the moment, but I mean, I have no ill will.  I want to see him do well.  James Iha I think is just a piece of shit.  I think he’s one of the worst human beings I’ve ever met in my life.  And D’arcy, she’s sort of, in her own way, sort of an innocent.”
Those photos that were released when she was arrested for missing a court date last year suggested she wasn’t really in a good place
“Yeah, it’s terrible.  But she’s not a bad person.  And I don’t hold any ill will towards her, even though I’ve had to deal with fucking lawsuits and stuff like that.  If there’s any fucking culprit in this it’s Iha.  But y’know, he was there at the right time in my life, we did do good things together, I think he is a good musician when he gives a fuck, which most of the time he doesn’t.  And that’s about it.”

ARTISTdirect ha departido con Kevin Martin, vocalista de Candlebox, sobre “Love Stories And Other Musings”, el nuevo disco de la banda.
“Tras el disco ‘Into The Sun’, nos tomamos algo de tiempo y nos concentramos en hacia donde íbamos. Hicimos algunas demos en otoño de 2009. Yo hice el disco con los chicos de The Gracious Few, que fue una buena distracción. Al mismo tiempo, me ofreció muchas nuevas experiencias y reconocí cosas en mi vida que quizá estaba echando de menos cosas como personalidades, relaciones y realidades. Hacía tiempo que no les había prestado atención o que incluso había olvidado. Nos volvimos a juntar para empezar con este disco y realmente me centré en aquello de lo que quería hablar. La mayoría de veces soy muy personal. No soy la clase de tipo que saca cosas ahí pero me sentía muy solo cuando estaba alejado de mi familia. Quería que las canciones reflejasen esa clase de sensación, lo dijeran o no las letras. Quería que dieran una sensación de soledad, desesperación, rabia, miedo, cabreo y frustración. Pasamos por todas esas emociones. Además, estaba prestando mucha atención a todo lo que estaba pasando en el mundo. ‘Youth In Revolt’ se inspiró en lo que estaba pasando en Egipto. Estaba yo en Lancaster, Pensilvania, trabajando con The Gracious Few y quedé abrumado por esas 48 horas de televisión mostrando las revueltas. La canción me vino de eso. El disco surge de esa clase de momentos. De ahí viene la cohesión. Me senté con Pete y dije, ‘Esta letra va de esto. Esta canción está escrita alrededor de esta clase de emoción, relación amorosa y relación’. Pasamos mucho tiempo hablando de eso.”
La banda incluye la versión del “Out Here All Night” de Damone, “una de nuestras bandas favoritas. Es un homenaje a ellos y su lado heavy metal. ”
Le preguntan si sigue encontrando la inspiración en los mismos sitios que cuando empezó.”Cuando nos pusimos a mirar los temas para regrabarlos, empecé a darme cuenta de como cantaba las canciones en relación a como fueron compuestas en 1991 o 1992. Había olvidado muchas cosas que me inspiraron como escritor. He crecido tanto a lo largo de los años. Tras 20 años haciendo música, me he convertido en un cuentacuentos diferente. Creo que ahora soy un poco más realista y no tan soñador en el sentido de que tenía fantasías cuando era niño de ondear esa red de inconsciencia en las letras y trataba de ser creativo de esa manera. Ahora, me he dado cuenta que a nadie le importa una mierda. La melodía lo es todo insultes o no en una canción (risas) No sé que clase de historias estoy contando ahora más allá de ser padre y marido. Mi vida es mucho más real ahora. Tengo muchas más responsabilidades reales. No ando por ahí comprando Porsches y volando de un sitio a otro del mundo pasándolo bien. Todo se centra en criar a mi famiia y disfrutar cada día con mi hijo y mi mujer.”
Martin reconoce que sigue teniendo tiempo para oír cosas heavys: “Tool ha sido siempre una de esas bandas. Soy fan de Mastodon. El lado heavy de Candlebox tiende a venir del pasado metalero de Pete: Iron Maiden y Led Zeppelin. Este disco es un poco más popero.”
Cuando se lo comparan con “Happy Pills”, afirma que “fue un disco interesante paa nostros. Dave Krusen ha tocado en este álbum y en ‘Happy Pills’. Tiene ese ritmo suelto de Dave cuando toca. Estuvo realmente instrumental en ese álbum.”

“After the album ‘Into The Sun’, we take some time and we concentrate on where you were going.” We did some demos in autumn 2009. I did the drive with the guys from The Gracious Few, that was a good distraction. At the same time, he offered me many new experiences and I recognized things in my life that was perhaps missing less things like personalities, relationships and realities. For some time that had ignored them or that he had even forgotten. We came back together to begin with this drive and I really focused on what I wanted to talk about. Most times I am very personal. I’m not the kind of type that takes things there but I felt very alone when I was away from my family. I wanted the songs reflect that kind of feeling, what to say or not lyrics. I wanted to give a sense of loneliness, despair, anger, fear, anger and frustration. We went through all those emotions. In addition, he was paying close attention to what was happening in the world. ‘Youth In Revolt’ was inspired by what was happening in Egypt. Was I in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, working with The Gracious Few and I was overwhelmed by those 48 hours of television showing the riots. The song came me from that. The disc arises from this kind of moments. Hence comes the cohesion. I sat down with Pete and said, ‘ this letter is this. This song is written about this kind of emotion, love affair and relationship ‘. “We spend much time talking about that.”

The band includes the version of the “Out Here All Night” of Damone, “one of our favorite bands.” a tribute to them and their Heavy Metal side. ”

“Ask if he continues finding inspiration in the same locations that when began.”When we got to look at the issues for recording, I started to realize of as sang the songs as regards as they were composed in 1991 or 1992. I had forgotten many things that inspired me as a writer. I have grown so much over the years. After 20 years of making music, I’ve become a different storyteller. I believe that I am now a little more realistic and not so dreamy in the sense that had fantasies when I was child of flag-waving that network of unconsciousness in the lyrics and tried to be creative in this way. Now, I’ve noticed account that nobody cares a shit. The melody is everything you insult or not in a song (laughs) do not know that kind of stories I am counting now beyond being father and husband. My life is now much more real. I have many more real responsibilities. I’m not out there buying Porsches and flying from one place to another of the world passing well. “Everything is focused on raising my family and enjoy every day with my son and my wife.”

Martin recognizes that  still have time to hear things heavy: “Tool has always been one of those bands.” I’m fan of Mastodon. The Candlebox heavy side tends to come from the Metalhead past Pete: Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden. “This album is a bit more can.”When they are compared with “Happy Pills”, stated that “it was an interesting drive paa us.” Dave Krusen has played on this album and ‘Happy Pills’. It has that pace loose Dave when he plays. “It was really instrumental in this album.”

En relación con esas canciones de Courtney Love ¿todavía tienes cualquier propiedad de ellas en un sentido compositivo? ¿Sientes como si fuesen tus canciones?

Yeah. Simplemente no quiero hablar de eso, de ella, nunca más. Creo que ya está pasado, realmente no tengo nada que decir sobre ello. Como decimos en América, agua bajo el puente (Water under the bridge), ya sabes.

¿Por qué esta encarnación actual de la banda, te ves a ti mismo girando y grabando con ella durante los próximos diez años?

No me gusta poner plazos, porque como dije no tomo nada por hecho, pero estoy muy contento y espero que nos quedemos juntos. Me gusta mucho la banda, me gusta el hecho de que todo el mundo esté involucrado, me gusta el hecho de que todos participaron en el álbum y que trabajaron duro en él. Esta es la versión “soleada” de la banda. Yo estuve en la versión oscura de la banda, esta es la versión soleada, así que espero que la versión soleada dure tanto tiempo como sea posible.

In terms of those Courtney Love songs do you still have any ownership of them in a songwriting sense? Did you feel like they were your songs?
Yeah. I just don’t really want to talk about that, her, that subject anymore. I think it’s played out, I really don’t have anything else to say about it. As we say in America, water under the bridge, you know.

What about the current incarnation of the band, can you see yourself touring and recording with it for the next ten years?
I don’t like to put timeframes, because like I said I don’t take anything for granted, but I’m really happy and I hope that we stay together. I really like the band, I like the fact that everybody’s involved, I like the fact that we all participated on the album, and worked hard on it together. This is the sunny version of the band. I was in the dark version of the band, this is the sunny version, so I hope the sunny version lasts as long as possible.

I was happy to see Jack White’s name was on there, I just think he’s one of the most talented people out there. He’s the type of guy where it’s like he’s always gonna be good, he’s always gonna do something important. I dunno if you call him the subsequent generation or two generations down but he’s somebody I feel lived up to the level that a musician should, which is being an innovator, an entrepreneur, a creator, and he has a restless spirit about his musical journey, so I really respect him for that.

I would love if that would happen, they were his friends first and I think the industry keeps them from pursuing some kind of connection with their friend’s Mom, and they’re moving on.”

Here’s a couple of quotes from Mark Yarm’s new Spin article where Courtney Love discusses where her relationship with Kurt Cobain might be at if he were still alive today.  The quotes were from when Yarm interviewed Love for his book Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge:

“We’d probably live on the Upper West fuckin’ Side now and have three fuckin’ kids,” she told me, unprompted, in February 2011.   “We might even have a divorce, like both be on our third marriage. I don’t fuckin’ know. He might be a playwright, [or have] his latest show in MoMA [New York's Museum of Modern Art].”

“I’d have a 16-year-old son and be his model wife. Given the money that is involved here” — she was referring to the tens of millions she says were stolen from Cobain’s estate — “we could probably have had a fuckin’ yacht. We could have gone open marriage at some point.” Again she stressed, “I don’t fuckin’ know.”

“[Live To Rise] no estaba escrita específicamente con la historia en mente, pero era algo en un sentido amplio, algo que funcione.  No es algo con lo que estemos muy preocupados, es una cosa bastante abierta pero que tenía que trabajar para una película de acción y personajes de cómics como este y obviamente para un amplio grupo de edades, porque creo que una película como ésta hace un llamamiento desde niños hasta ancianos porque es una película de acción de personajes de cómics, pero es también bastante ingeniosa tanto en los diálogos como en la actuación de los actores.  Así que tenía que ser algo abierto a todo eso.  ”Pero también y ante todo tiene que ser una canción de Soundgarden, por lo que sólo lo hicimos  y funcionó y estoy feliz por ello”.

“No soy un fan de cómics enorme, pero no podía ser un niño que crecía en Seattle y no saber lo que estaba sucediendo en ese mundo”.

“[Live to Rise] wasn’t written specifically with the story in mind but kind of in a broad sense, something that would work.  It’s not like it’s something we get too preoccupied with, and it’s a fairly open thing but it had to work for an action film and comic book characters like this and obviously for a broad group of ages, because I think a film like this appeals to little kids all the way to old people because it’s an action film it’s comic book characters but it’s also pretty witty dialog and accomplished actors doing it.  So it had to be somewhat open to all of that.  But also first and foremost it has to be a Soundgarden song, so we just did that and it worked and I’m happy about that.”

“I’m not a huge comic book fan, but you couldn’t be a kid growing up in Seattle and not know what’s going on in that world.”

“Some of the songs on our new album are pretty far left of center, and sort of zero in on more of a hardcore Soundgarden fan and not necessarily a family that goes to see a film like that.  Although it’s not really what I think of as a necessarily family friendly song, but it’s as close as we’ve ever come.”

“I like just the whole first verse [of Live to Rise], and just sneaking that past Disney executives and getting it into a film I like that part.  Just listen to the words to the first verse, it just kind of sums up the horror we go through trying to figure out while we’re all here in a popcorn movie.  I think we got away with a lot getting that past them.”

“I think the first song we wrote lyrics to for the new album was music that Matt brought in and I listened to it and started writing lyrics and a melody and did a quick demo of it and it just was insane to me how it sounded so much like Soundgarden and only like Soundgarden and there’s nothing that I had done since we split up that was anything like that.”
