Gossard y Walla recordaron memorias de la KCMU  (Universidad de Washington), la estación de radio pública de Seattle que fue clave en el apoyo a la escena rock emergente de la zona en los años 80 y principios de los ‘ 90.

Both Gossard and Walla recalled memories of University of Washington’s KCMU, the Seattle public radio station that was key in supporting the area’s emerging rock scene in the ’80s and early ’90s.

“[KCMU successor KEXP] is probably one of the most influential music design organizations out there in terms of their impact in Seattle, but also their impact worldwide… And the model that they’re working with… which is they’re trusting their DJs to an enormous degree to create this blend that people are going to love… Their fans are supporting it,” Gossard mused, discussing the station’s transformation from college radio hub KCMU to the current KEXP in 2001. He also cites the station’s ongoing support of Pearl Jam and his other long-running band Brad, which released a new album, “United We Stand,” this week.

“Mookie Blaylock’s first tour was with Alice in Chains, down the West Coast. There was the Alice in Chains minivan and the Mookie Blaylock minivan, and my best friend Keith was driving the Alice in Chains minivan and being an all-around roadie/tech/lighting guy. I was in the van with Mookie Blaylock, and we would have food fights between the minivans at 80 miles an hour on I-5.

“Mookie Blaylock and Alice in Chains were different on every level. Why they would fit together I didn’t know, but they almostseemed like one big band then.”

Black says he would never do anything to tarnish Cobain’s legacy.

“I personally hold no one in higher esteem in the world of rock,” he said. “Kurt Cobain for me is at the top of the pyramid. He was the king…When he died it was sort of the end of rock.”

De una entrevista hecha por Under the Radar // Here’s an excerpt from Under the Radar‘s new interview with Mark Lanegan.

Antes de que fueras un artista en solitario tú estuviste en los Screaming Trees. Mira hacia atrás, ¿Cómo fue para ti esa escena en un principio)

Fui como cualquiera,  era un fan de la música y escuchaba lo que había. Disfruté tocando mi propia música y finalmente entré en contacto con algunos chicos que realmente tenían una banda y algo especial salió de allí. Pero definitivamente empezó porque yo era un fan de la música.

Cuéntame desde dentro de la escena, desde el exterior parece una gran subcultura

Una cosa es que nunca me he sentido muy dentro de la comunidad. Tuve algunos amigos cercanos que estaban también en bandas y había un montón de bandas de una ciudad muy pequeña que se hizo muy popular, y eso fue raro. Pero yo estuve en la carretera mucho de ese tiempo, por lo que tampoco hice gran relación con nadie

¿Alguna fuerte amistad?

No,  lo que quiero decir es que tenía amigos que tocaban en bandas y ocasionalmente tocábamos juntos en alguna grabación,  pero es al igual que lo es ahora.

Before you were a solo artist you were in seminal band Screaming Trees. Reflecting back, what drew you to the scene in the beginning?

Well it’s like anybody, I was a fan of music and listening to records. I enjoyed playing my own music and eventually I came into contact with some guys who actually had a band and it sort of went from there. But it definitely started because I was a fan of music.

Tell me about being part of what seems, from the outside, a really tight knit environment and subculture.

Well for one thing I never felt part of a community. I had some close friends who were also in bands and there were a lot of bands from a really small city who became really popular and that was weird. But I was on the road for a lot of that time you know it’s not like everyone got together and barbequed or anything.

Did it ever feel like any of you guys had a shared vision of any kind?

No. I mean like I said I had friends who were in bands and occasionally we would play on each other’s records but it’s just the same as it is now.

Yo era un gran fan de Pearl Jam. Crecí en el noroeste. Allí son enormes. Es decir, son enormes en todas partes, pero sobre todo hay. Y eso es por lo que siempre los he escuchado

Eddie es un fanático del béisbol enorme. Gran fan de los Cubs. Hay un montón de chicos que le han conocido. Sean Casey, que es un fan de Pearl Jam hasta la muerte, ha hablado con Eddie en numerosas veces. Cuando me traspasaron a Boston y jugamos un partido, esa noche Eddie estaba tocando en algún lugar en Boston en su gira en solitario. Y me firmó este cartel, “Hey, Jason, Bienvenido a los Red Sox.” Y, a continuación, Casey me dio su número. Por lo tanto nos mandamos mensajes antes y ahora

¿Estabas nervioso cuando te reuniste con él por primera vez?

So how did you get to know Vedder?

I was a huge Pearl Jam fan. I grew up in the Northwest. They’re huge there. I mean, they’re huge everywhere, but especially there. And that’s always what I listened to.

Eddie’s a huge baseball fan. Huge Cubs fan. There’s a lot of guys who have met him. Sean Casey, who’s a diehard Pearl Jam fan, he’s hung out with Eddie numerous times. When I got traded to Boston, we played a game and that night Eddie was playing somewhere in Boston on his solo tour. And he signed this poster, “Hey, Jason, welcome to the Red Sox.” And then Casey gave me his number. So we text back and forth.

Were you nervous when you first met?

I’ve never met him. I’ve never actually technically met him. And that’s the funny part. Casey was like, “Hey, here’s his number, he said text him.” So he was like “Hey, sounds good man. If I’m ever up in Seattle recording . . .” He’s never up there.

He’s got a lot going on. I’m probably the last person [on his mind]. “Oh, I’ve got to call Jason Bay!”

What music did you listen to growing up?

Anything you could listen to. Nirvana. Sort of alternative, grunge, and actually some Canadian bands. The Tragically Hip. Some obscure stuff. You’ve heard of them.

They’re not real big, but they’re huge in Canada. A lot of Canadian bands. And then a little bit of Alice in Chains. Soundgarden. All that stuff. Stone Temple Pilots.
