Hoy hace un año de la muerte de Mike Starr, ex bajista de Alice In Chains, que estuvo en el grupo desde 1987 hasta 1993, es decir, que toco en Facelift, Sap, y Dirt, y dejó el grupo en medio de la gira del disco Dirt. Después de estar en Alice In Chains su actividad musical bajo, influenciado también por su adicción a las drogas. Pocos meses antes de su muerte, Mike había anunciado su vuelta formal a la música, pero desgraciamente el día 10 de marzo de 2011 fue hallado muerto. No mucho más que decir, la última “gran” muerte del Grunge, parece ser que la heroína no perdona, que sigue acechando… solo decir, que descanses en paz, que te lo mereces

Today a year ago of the death of Mike Starr, former bassist for Alice In Chains, which was in the band from 1987 until 1993, i.e., that played in Facelift, Sap, and Dirt, and left the group in the middle of the tour of the album Dirt.  A few months before his death, Mike had announced his formal return to music, but unfortunately on March 10, 2011 was found dead. Not much more to say, the last “great” death of Grunge, appears to be that heroin does not forgive, still lurking… just say, rest in peace,  you deserve it!

Ha muerto el legendario productor de Seattle Kearney Barton

Ha muerto a la edad de 81 años. En los últimos años su edad fue empeorando poco a poco, pero él siempre andaba gastando bromas a sus más allegados y se lo tomaba todo con buena filosofía. Kearney fue un pionero del característico sonido del norte de EE.UU y quizás se le podría llamar el inventor del mismo. Nos enseñó grupos como Frantics, the Sonics, Little Bill, Don & The Good Times y muchos más. Pero lo que verdad nos hizo fijarnos en él fue la canción de Black On White Affair “Bold Soul Sister, Bold Soul Brother", grabado por Kearney en febrero.

Last night we got an email from Kearney Barton’s niece Patti, telling us the incredibly sad news that Kearney passed away peacefully at 8 PM.  He was 81-years old.  Over the last couple years, Kearney’s health had been deteriorating, but he was still sharp as a nail, hanging on and cracking jokes when we last saw him over the holidays.  To say Kearney was a pioneer of the Northwest sound would be a massive understatement.  Maybe he was the inventor?  Whatever the tag, we miss the man.  He taught us about the Frantics, the Sonics, Little Bill, Don & The Good Times, and so many more, but the one that really blew our minds was Black On White Affair’s “Bold Soul Sister, Bold Soul Brother,” recorded by Kearney in February ’70 and released on his Topaz label.  It’s the tune that led me to Kearney’s doorstep in 2003, hoping to convince the wizard to let us license the single for inclusion on a comp of Seattle soul from back in the day.  I quickly discovered the man had a heart of gold and a sense of humor that would make your grandfather proud.  He was a genuine sweetheart who loved to work and record and record some more, making his famous cookies for guests, and watching a hydroplane race now and then.  I remember him saying he’d had a bunch of calls from overseas reissue labels wanting to license the single, but he felt reluctant.  Kearney liked the idea of working with a local label.  Bless his soul.
