Three smiles (Portalternativo)
Algunos recordaréis como allá por el 2003 un trío californiano lograba cierta repercusión con un tema (y un álbum) de aires ‘grungeros’ (a discreción del oyente queda si calificarlo de post o neo). Se llamaban Smile Empty Soul y sus posteriores discos, sin perder calidad, no obtuvieron los mismos réditos comerciales. Ahora, los de Santa Clarita, regresan con “3”, que, ciertamente, ha significado toda una odisea para la banda.
“No ha sido un viaje fácil,” asegura entre risas el frontman Sean Danielson a Noisecreep. “Sacamos un disco en 2009 llamado ‘Consciousness’ en 2009 y salimos de gira la segunda mitad del año y durante todo 2010. Llegamos a casa justo antes de Navidad de 2010 y estábamos totalmente desencantados con como iba la industria musical. Así que nos tomamos un descanso y nos reagrupamos.”
La banda ha tenido una vida musical con muchos sobresaltos: “Bueno, ‘3’ será nuestro quinto álbum y saldrá en nuestro cuarto sello diferente. Hemos tenido nuestra pequeña dosis de inestabilidad -en lo que a sellos, managements y todas esas cosas- se refiere. Es desalentador. Cuando tienes tanta gente haciéndote mal, hace que quieras dejar la industria por un tiempo. Pero hacemos música así que seguimos adelante. Supongo que simplemente necesitamos tomarnos un respiro de tanto en cuanto. Así que si, échale la culpa a la industria musical.”
El 22 de mayo se ponrá a la venta el álbum del que cuenta Danielson como se gestó: “Allá por abril de 2011, juntamos algo de material nuevo y empezamos a trabajar en una agenda de lo que queríamos hacer. Durante ese tiempo, empezamos entrevistando a diferentes managers para ver quien sería el adecuado para nosotros. También reservamos un estudio y nos pusimos una agenda para grabar nuestro siguiente álbum. Las sesiones del álbum empezaron en julio. Una vez nos pusimos a volver a trabajar, las cosas empezaron a pasar como queríamos. Hace unas dos o tres semanas firmamos con los colegas de eOne. Empezamos a hablar con ellos en diciembre de 2011 y fue genial lograr cerrar el acuerdo.”
El productor ha sido Eddie Wohl: “Hizo nuestro álbum ‘Consciousness’ y nos encantó trabajar con él. Nos entiende como personas y nuestro sonido. Nunca trata de cambiar de lo que vamos musicalmente. Grabamos la batería en The Steakhouse en North Hollywood y todo se hizo en su estudio casero, que se llama Babyland Studios.”
En cuanto al sonido, cuenta: “Hemos crecido en este álbum. Es un disco diferente si lo pones al lado de los otros que hemos hecho. Este es más heavy y más orientado a los riffs que nada que hayamos hecho antes. Es más progresivo pero aún tiene esa base melódica que siempre hemos tenido. Creo que alguna gente se sorprenderá de parte del nuevo material pero si les gustamos en el pasado, estarán felices.”

Some recall as back in 2003 a Californian trio achieved some impact with a song (and album) with a grunge relation(at the discretion of the listener is if described as post or neo). Called Smile Empty Soul and their subsequent albums, without losing quality, not obtained the same commercial returns. That now, of Santa Clarita, returning with “3″, which certainly meant an Odyssey for the band.
“Has not been an easy journey,” says between laughs frontman Sean Danielson to Noisecreep. “We released an album in 2009 called ‘Consciousness’ in 2009 and left the second half of the year and during the whole tour 2010.” We got home just before Christmas of 2010 and we were totally disenchanted with as the music industry was. “So we take a break and us reagrupamos.”
The band has had a musical life with many surprises: “Well, ’3′ will be our fifth album and will be released in our fourth different label.” We had our little dose of instability – as far as labels, managements and all these things – refers. It is disappointing. When you have so many people doing you wrong, it makes you want to leave the industry for a while. But we make music so we are pushing ahead. I guess we just need to take a break from both as soon as. “So if, put you the blame on the music industry.”
On 22 may be ponrá released the album which features Danielson as he conceived: “Back in April 2011, we met some new material and started work on an agenda of what we wanted to do.” During that time, we started interviewing different managers to see who would be suitable for us. We also reserve a study and we got a schedule to record our next album. The sessions for the album began in July. Once we got to go back to work, things began to happen as we wanted to. Two or three weeks ago we signed with eOne colleagues. “We began to talk to them in December 2011 and it was great to achieve close the agreement.”
The producer has been Eddie Wohl: “Did our album ‘Consciousness’ and we loved working with him.” We understand as individuals and our sound. It is never change what we musically. “We recorded the drums at The Steakhouse in North Hollywood and everything was made at his home Studio, called Babyland Studios.”
As for the sound, has: “Have grown in this album.” It is a different disk if you put next to each other that we have done. This is more heavy and more oriented riffs than anything we have done before. It is more progressive, but it still has that melodic basis we have always had. “I think some people will be surprised at some of the new material but if we tasted them in the past, they will be happy.”
