Layne Staley’s mother has not spoken with Alice In Chains in 10 years
IN ENGLISH
“I had no connection to [Layne and Alice In Chains'] music, I had no idea, because I just didn’t get it. So when he came home I wanted a regular relationship with my son, I wasn’t interested in how other people saw him at all and he was very humble. He never talked about it other than to tell me he had an interesting life.”
“Frankly they never disbanded the band, it’s a business. It took me awhile to figure some of these things out. I felt for the fans’ sake they might want to move on with a different name just so people didn’t criticize them for moving on using Layne’s name. But I also understand that they are the musicians and there is no Alice In Chains without them. They had every right to do what they did. Do I hear from them? No. Do I care about what happens to them? Absolutely. I have invited them to come to the house many times. As Layne’s friends I would just want them to tell me funny stories that they remember, so for 10 years that has never happened. I’d love it if somebody picked up the phone, and said Nancy, I’ve got to tell you something funny that happened when Layne was in Berlin. I would love if that would happen, they were his friends first and I think the industry keeps them from pursuing some kind of connection with their friend’s Mom, and they’re moving on.”
“I have kept connected with the fans, it’s been very important to them and it has opened my eyes to Layne’s world. I didn’t think about depression, he was quiet and he was intense, and I didn’t know that he was probably struggling with depression.”
“The interviewer asked if Demri Parrot’s death (Layne’s girlfriend and the love of his life) in October 1996 is what made Layne get really bad off and Nancy said, “No, it was bad before that.”
“Then [Layne] became reclusive, and it was really hard to keep a sense of what was going on. I had no intentions of laying down any ultimatums that would push Layne away from me. That’s a mother’s right is to hold that place in her life with her child.”
“Let’s not forget that Layne and Kurt Cobain both passed away on the same day, April 5th, 8 years apart. And we won’t forget that Layne lost his dear friend Mike Starr and many other wonderful and talented musicians, and fans. I hear from parents who have lost their children, I hear from friends who have lost their parents, I hear from people who have lost their friends. There is just no good thing that comes out of drug addiction.”

Recordando a Layne Staley

Remembering Layne Staley
REMEMBERING LAYNE STALEY PART 3: THE SAP SESSIONS
WRITTEN BY DAVID BRONSTEIN & EDITED BY BRETT BUCHANAN
Layne Staley has been here before, but in the tiny voice booth that accommodates the London Bridge Studios, he is filled with frustration. Alice in Chains will be here for an entire week recording their second EP, Sap. Four songs are planned but the record will eventually end up with five.
Staley and the band know this studio well. It’s where Alice’s first demo and debut album Facelift were recorded.  But on a late Friday afternoon Layne is struggling to hit the right notes on one of the most haunting tracks that the group would ever record. The house engineer, and now co-owner of the studio, Jonathan Plum recalls: “The first time I heard Layne sing was on the song Am I Inside.  He was struggling with his pitch; in fact it took a lot of work for him to sing the song correctly.” With Ann Wilson of Heart fame having already laid down her vocals and the music being complete the pressure was on Staley to deliver. “Rick Parasher who was the studio owner and producer on the record kept asking Layne to sing certain parts over and over again, I was struck by how difficult it was for him,” says Plum. Parasher believed he knew where the problem lay. “When the band left, I later asked Rick about it, and he told me that for the screamy style Layne was much more comfortable and accurate with. He just ‘belts it out’. A few days later I heard Layne belting and Rick was right, he nailed that style in a take or two.  By the time the band were recording Dirt he was simply a one take guy, spot on.”
On late Saturday afternoon Layne Staley arrives at the studio a bit tired, but in an upbeat mood. Early in the morning he had helped his father chop wood.  Jerry, Sean and Mike are busy laying down their tracks and rehearsing, so Layne decides to hang out in the lounge.  He grabs breakfast and switches on the television, hoping to catch his favorite cartoons.  “Okay so there’s Layne just hanging out on the couch watching cartoons and eating kids breakfast cereal from the box,” recalls Plum.  ”He flips it over and notices there is an activity on the back of the box. Layne filled out the activity in a very sick way. I remember one of the questions was ‘Where to put something?’  His answer: Urethra. After he cut out the box and put his answers on the fridge.”
Plum says of Staley, “He was by far the most laid back guy in the band. He was very down to Earth with me and kind.  For example one morning he asked me how long I had worked at the studios for, and if I liked my job.  He was one of the very few musicians who took the time to ask about me and share some of his normal life.  By contrast Jerry Cantrell never acknowledged my presence unless he needed something. At the same time I also understood that he was in a very intense creative mode when he was at the studio. He was not unkind, just focused on his work.  Thinking back Jerry was the creative force in the band with a much more intense personality than Layne.”
The Sap sessions were an oddity in the fact that no one really knew if these recording sessions would ultimately bring a release. “Jerry would just keep on throwing down ideas,” says Plum. “The sessions were certainly off the cuff, a lot of fucking around and experimenting going on.”  A few clues that the recordings would see the light of day were some of the chosen guest singers on the EP.  Soungarden’s Chris Cornell and Mudhoney’s Mark Arm (Cantrell’s request) were brought in to sing on Right Turn, which created the shortest lived supergroup in history, ‘Alice Mudgarden’.  The aforementioned Ann Wilson sang backing vocals on Brother and Am I Inside. There was talk of having Kurt Cobain come in, but Nirvana were in Europe and Nevermind had just exploded.
Plum recalls that having the band in the studio for a week could be quite the task, “It was a little nutty, I was the assistant engineer but I was also responsible for cleaning the studio and really anything else that was needed. I was the only employee back then and in those days the studio was not set up well for big major label projects. I remember even running to the store and grabbing Thai takeaway for the band.”
On the second to last day of recording, with music laid on tape and the studio shut off just past 8PM, the members of Alice in Chains decided to throw a party after a 9 hour session. It would not be the last one. “One night it was 3AM and I had to wait until the band wanted to go home.  They had some friends over and threw a party. Though it was very interesting to watch the band party, I didn’t like having to simply hang out and wait. It wasn’t like I was invited to party with the band,” says Plum.
Sap wound up having five songs: Brother, Got Me Wrong, Right Turn, Am I Inside, and the unlisted track Love Song (Sean Kinney’s baby). Sap would be quite a departure from anything Alice had recorded in the past, but the EP was released the following February and went Gold despite a lack of promotion.  Photographer Rocky Schenck took a telling picture for the EP’s back cover. Members of the band urinating on their own pictures, one from the Facelift sessions and the other a promo picture from the previous summer’s Clash of the Titans tour. The band had moved on, and were ready to begin a new chapter.

Más sobre la foto de Layne Staley

More about the photo of Layne Staley
IN ENGLISH
GrungeReport.net has posted some articles recently on a new Layne Staley photo that is confirmed to be from at least September 1998 at the earliest (when the shirt Layne is wearing in it was released with a video game). The guy who e-mailed me the story about the photo being from 2001, Scott Farro, has been revealed to be a liar. His e-mail is scott.farro@yahoo.com.
It’s looking more likely that the photo may be from Halloween 1998, somebody claimed they talked to the guy Jimmy in the photo and he said that’s when it was taken. I contacted Jimmy myself but got no response. The story is that Layne was backstage at Jerry Cantrell’s solo show on Halloween 1998 in Seattle. Obviously don’t take this as fact, the only 100% fact about the picture we know is it was taken sometime between 1998-2002 because of the shirt.

The mother of Layne Staley wants his son sunglasses
Sacado de Grungereport.net // Extracted of grungereport.net

GrungeReport.net posted an article a few days ago about an eBay auction for Layne Staley’s sunglasses and TV Guide magazine (some new photographs that were used as proof that they were Layne’s glasses). The glasses sold for $1,800. Layne’s Mom Nancy McCallum posted this comment on David de Sola’s blog.  For the record David verified to me that Nancy did indeed leave the comment:
“This is ghoulish. Layne’s things still belong to him, and should be returned to his estate, where his belongings are lovingly cared for by his family in “his room”.
The items can be returned to PO 63, Mukilteo, WA 98275, no questions asked.”
There have been rumors online for years that many of Layne’s belongings were stolen around the time of his death, and this is obviously an example of that. So whoever won the auction, please send the glasses to Nancy!

More about the new photo of Layne Staley
Sacado de Grungereport.net // Extracted of  Grungereport.net
IN ENGLISH
Scott commented this on GrungeReport.net’s original article about the photo. Obviously take this with a grain of salt, but he seems very believable:
The photograph is including of Layne Staley. I was an acquaintance (who shall remain nameless at the moment) of the girl who took this photograph (described by Layne as someone he knew from “The Rainbow”) and I was present at the time it was taken in Seattle. It was, in fact, during the month of October, 2001. The photo was NOT taken at or near the place that he spoke of.
Though I was only around Mr. Staley a few times during this particular week, I can confirm that he was wearing these glasses, as well as the same clothing (including grey cargo pants w/black boots) the entire time.  He also did not speak much because he appeared to be missing all of his top front teeth and had few remaining at the bottom front of his jaw. He did not want to make a full smile but had nothing against the picture being taken.
We are not sure how the pictures had ever been leaked – nor can we disclose how Mr. Staley was carrying out his life during this week, but it is important that fans not pay attention to the “works” of Adriana Rubio in particular. My brief time around Layne holds memories of a tired, yet warm and friendly man who was not as reclusive as people may think and seemed to enjoy the company that he was keeping that week.
I then followed up with an e-mail and Scott gave me more information:
The reason I spent time with a small group of his friends is because my acquaintance and I were involved with a similar lifestyle for a period of time. Being familiar with the music his band had made, I was asked by our mutual friend not to mention this at any point during the days we were around him. He came across as a very nice person and did not seem depressed. It was not strictly business, but apparently, he had severed those relations and I was to approach him as I would anyone else. It was not hard to distinguish his few friends from those who may have been of another importance.  I will not disclose the activies that took place during the week, except to add Layne Staley frequented a couple of places by night and that we were present with him.
The reason we have decided to provide this information (even though limited) to a few media outlets, is due to the fact that with Mike Starr’s passing, and of Alice In Chains working on possible new music – questions of interest about Mr. Staley have once again started to make rounds in the community such as people who may or may not be involved with much larger media.  The original owner of the photo wishes to remain completely anonymous and has sought only to offer a small amount of insight to what fans have been wondering amidst various rumours triggered by mainstream and local media in the past. No severe, physical disfigurements were ever known of Layne Staley except for weight loss and missing teeth – nor was he truly known to be reclusive.
Though we believe the leak of this photo may have been accidental, we hope this helps people to have a little more understanding of things regarding his last period of time.
