Gossard y Walla recordaron memorias de la KCMU  (Universidad de Washington), la estación de radio pública de Seattle que fue clave en el apoyo a la escena rock emergente de la zona en los años 80 y principios de los ‘ 90.

“[KCMU, sucesor KEXP] es probablemente una de las más influyentes organizaciones de música allí en términos de su impacto en Seattle, pero también en su impacto en todo el mundo… Y el modelo con el que está trabajando…  está confiando en sus DJs en un grado enorme para crear esta mezcla que la gente va a amar… Sus fans lo están apoyando,”meditaba Gossard, discutiendo la transformación de la estación de radio de la Universidad a la KEXP actual . Both Gossard and Walla recalled memories of University of Washington’s KCMU, the Seattle public radio station that was key in supporting the area’s emerging rock scene in the ’80s and early ’90s.

“[KCMU successor KEXP] is probably one of the most influential music design organizations out there in terms of their impact in Seattle, but also their impact worldwide… And the model that they’re working with… which is they’re trusting their DJs to an enormous degree to create this blend that people are going to love… Their fans are supporting it,” Gossard mused, discussing the station’s transformation from college radio hub KCMU to the current KEXP in 2001. He also cites the station’s ongoing support of Pearl Jam and his other long-running band Brad, which released a new album, “United We Stand,” this week.

Pearl Jam ha añadido su nombre a una lista músicos importantes en contra de una sección de Backpage.com, donde niños y adolescentes son vendidos para el sexo.

“Village Voice Media tiene una historia de ser un firme defensor de las Artes, de informar ampliamente sobre músicos y su trabajo en sus 13 semanarios en todo el país. Esos músicos están hablando ahora en contra del Village Voice Media para derribar la sección de adultos de Backpage.com donde proxenetas anuncian la venta de niñas para sexo, es importante y deben enviar un mensaje claro a la empresa que tiene que tomar medidas para asegurarse que ningún niño es explotado sexualmente mediante el uso de su sitio,”dijo bajista de R.E.M., Mike Mills, en un comunicado de prensa.

Pearl Jam has added their name to a list of leading musicians spoke out against the Village Voice Media-owned Backpage.com’s Adult classified section, where teens and children have been sold for sex.

“Village Voice Media has a history of being a strong advocate for the arts, reporting extensively on musicians and their work in its 13 weeklies across the country. That musicians are now speaking out against Village Voice Media’s refusal to take down the Adult section of Backpage.com where pimps advertise the sale of girls for sex is significant and should send a clear message to the company that it needs to take action to ensure no child is sexually exploited through use of its site,” Mike Mills, R.E.M.’s bassist said in a press release.

En relación con esas canciones de Courtney Love ¿todavía tienes cualquier propiedad de ellas en un sentido compositivo? ¿Sientes como si fuesen tus canciones?

Yeah. Simplemente no quiero hablar de eso, de ella, nunca más. Creo que ya está pasado, realmente no tengo nada que decir sobre ello. Como decimos en América, agua bajo el puente (Water under the bridge), ya sabes.

¿Por qué esta encarnación actual de la banda, te ves a ti mismo girando y grabando con ella durante los próximos diez años?

No me gusta poner plazos, porque como dije no tomo nada por hecho, pero estoy muy contento y espero que nos quedemos juntos. Me gusta mucho la banda, me gusta el hecho de que todo el mundo esté involucrado, me gusta el hecho de que todos participaron en el álbum y que trabajaron duro en él. Esta es la versión “soleada” de la banda. Yo estuve en la versión oscura de la banda, esta es la versión soleada, así que espero que la versión soleada dure tanto tiempo como sea posible.

In terms of those Courtney Love songs do you still have any ownership of them in a songwriting sense? Did you feel like they were your songs?
Yeah. I just don’t really want to talk about that, her, that subject anymore. I think it’s played out, I really don’t have anything else to say about it. As we say in America, water under the bridge, you know.

What about the current incarnation of the band, can you see yourself touring and recording with it for the next ten years?
I don’t like to put timeframes, because like I said I don’t take anything for granted, but I’m really happy and I hope that we stay together. I really like the band, I like the fact that everybody’s involved, I like the fact that we all participated on the album, and worked hard on it together. This is the sunny version of the band. I was in the dark version of the band, this is the sunny version, so I hope the sunny version lasts as long as possible.
