Renovar a los Smashing Pumpkins en 2007 y ahora ¿Por qué?
A los 19 años de edad había desarrollado la arquitectura de mi banda definitiva. Quería estar en una banda que podría ser Black Sabbath un minuto, los Beatles el siguiente, The Cure el próximo. Así que cuando estaba fuera de las calabazas haciendo ese polémico folk rock o lo que carajos sea lo que estábamos haciendo, seguí pensando solamente en que había abandonado mi máximo sueño para estar en un sueño menor, así que ¿por qué estoy en este sueño? Abandoné el sueño porque pensé que sería injusto continuar la banda sin James Iha porque ya habíamos empezado la banda. Así que, James Iha no me envia tarjetas de Navidad y no hablé con él en cinco años. ¿Así que no estoy en Smashing Pumpkins debido a algún chico que no se preocupa por mí pero estoy leal a él basado en una idea formulada hace 17 años? Le jode y jode a todo el mundo! ¡ quiero a mi banda volver! Joder esto! Quiero que mi sueño, básicamente. Las calabazas es el sueño. Jeff, Nicole y Mike son lo que representan las calabazas

You reformed a version of the Pumpkins in 2007 and again now. Why?
At 19 years-old I’d developed my ultimate band architecture. I wanted to be in a band that could be Black Sabbath one minute, The Beatles the next, The Cure the next. So when I was out of the Pumpkins doing this folksy rootsy rock or whatever the fuck we were doing, I kept thinking I’d just left my ultimate dream to be in a lesser dream, so why did I give up the dream? I gave up the dream because I thought it would be unfair to continue the band without James Iha because we had started the band. Well, James Iha doesn’t send me Christmas cards and I haven’t talked to him in five years. So I’m not in the Smashing Pumpkins because of some guy who doesn’t care about me but I am loyal to him based on an idea formulated 17 years ago? Fuck him and fuck everybody! I want my band back! Fuck this! I want my dream back, basically. The Pumpkins is the dream. Jeff, Nicole and Mike believe in what the Pumpkins represent

Después de Siamese Dream decidiste grabar Mellon Collie Y The Infinite Sadness yhacerlo como un álbum doble. ¿Cómo reaccionó la gente con ello?
Estaban horrorizados. Intentaron convencerme y cuando se dieron cuenta de no podían convencerme trataron de decirme, “Vamos A hacer lo que Guns N’ Roses hizo y sacarlo como dos registros separados: Mellon Collie One, Mellon Collie dos.” Dije que absolutamente que no. En mi mente un doble álbum significaba un álbum blanco. Sentí que había sólo unas pocas personas de mi generación que tuviesen ese nivel de talento que “yo tenía”. Kurt Cobain podría haber hecho el álbum blanco. También tenía mi nivel de talento. Él no lo hizo pero podría haberlo hecho, pero nosotros estábamos discutiendo con gente que no podría nunca haber escrito Tonight, Tonigh o Disarm o even a Today, así que fue como “Que le jodan a todo eso!” Mellon Collie…fue como nuestra manera de decir, ” no somos como esas otras bandas.”

After Siamese Dream you decided to record Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and make it as a double album. How did the label react to that?
They were horror-stricken. They tried to talk me out of it and when they realised they couldn’t talk me out of it then they tried to say, “Let’s do what Guns N’ Roses did and release it as two separate records: Mellon Collie One, Mellon Collie Two.” I said absolutely not. In my mind double album meant The White Album. I felt there were only a few people in my generation who had that talent level that I did. Kurt Cobain could have made The White Album. To me he had that talent level. He didn’t do it but he could have done it, but we were getting lumped in with people that could never have written Tonight, Tonight or Disarm or even a Today, so I was like, “Fuck all this!” Mellon Collie…was our way of saying, “W are not like those other bands.”
